Something stinks about the Tommy Suggs 2001

Memorial entrance just created this year. Tommy claims it was his idea in 1981 to play 2001. He said he got the idea from watching Elvis and if it was good enough for the king then it was OK for him.
Supposedly Carlen had the band play it in 81 at his bidding but nobody could hear it. When sc upgraded Williams brice speakers in 83 then the entrance officially started.
I was at the usc vs so cal game in 83 where it was first played. I know for a fact that the anthem has always been attributed to Joe Morrison.
It was said that Joe wanted to come up with Something special and he w as an elvis fanatic and thought 2001 would be good. There were articles about that and how 2001 was borne. That's a fact.
So something smells..im thinking this Tommy Suggs story is not true. And regardless of which story is correct, the state newspaper has published conflicting stories.

My parents had season tickets during that time period and that's seem like what I remember. I remember going to the Duke game that year because it was my first time sitting in the upper deck on the east side. Of course, I could also be mis-remembering since that was almost 40 years ago.
But I vividly remember when the band playing 2001 during the games at that time. They also played Krypton in the 4th Qtr,/End of the game before UGA stole it from us...
This reminds me of what we used to say at The Citadel (as a joke of course). You'd hear all the time "But it's a tradition!!" Well by our Sr year we finally figured out that a "tradition" is anything we'd done more than twice. So I think that both can be true. That Tommy got the band to play it the first time, but JoeMo installed it the way it is today. There was more than one Elvis fan back in the day. No matter who started it, it's awesome.
And 30 years from now, they're going to be arguing about who started Sandstorm...

I was at that game, my church youth group ran a concession stand on the bottom level, but I don't remember us playing any song most likely because I was in the indoor field under the stands playing football with Carlens son like every home game. I do remember blowing the Trojans out.

That game was lit. The football team was so hyped up the Trojans had zero shot.
We sat on row 3 in south stands next to goalpost. When we had them backed up to the their own 2 yard line the punter stood on the back line not 30 feet away.
Those seats are bad when the action is on the other side but when the ball gets to the 20 it's all action..
Great game..

I wish I could offer a meaningful recollection but I was either at Bragg or in Italy through the late 70s and most of the 80s. Although, I did get to attend a few games in the late 70s after driving down from Bragg.
First time I experienced 2001, in person, was '92 vs Tennessee.
I had always assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that it was a JoeMo thing.
