Figured with football a month and some weeks away we should talk about the season. Lots to hear about prior to the first game.

One is our new QB. I followed his senior season in HS and was very impressed. Of course he has to learn college speed but I have no doubts he can and will.

One thing that stuck out to me in HS is how great he was a running. He has some moves! But is not a running QB in the sense of looking to run. We will have some designed runs no doubt.

But what I noticed in HS was how much pocket awareness he had. And his toughness standing in pocket and releasing at last moment giving his wr time to open up. Most QBs run at first sign of trouble but Jackson does not. If last second no one is getting open he will run and is great at it. But he is pass first.

One of the positive side effects of staying in pocket is how this helps the OLine. Keep in mind the Line is looking forward at the defender and has no idea if the QB scrambled quickly (unless its a called QB run). They are blocking to an imaginary area where they expect the QB to be based on the call and will move their defender around this area. If the QB is moving too much thats where the defender has advantage since they are facing the QB. And since OLine has no idea they can block a defender to the QB. Little things like that matter.

One of my beefs with DG was his long ball was off most times. He was great in closer range but could not take the top off. JA can do that. He’ll still need to hit his man but his arm strength will not be an issue at all. DG missed a lot of open WRs deep.

I also think we use our TE’s and RBs more this year. We have a lot of talent in both the WR and RB rooms.

Another note is headset comms. This likely helps us getting plays called in faster and since our OLine is newer it gives more time to get them set.

A one minute clip of Jackson answering a few questions

JA + this WR corps + an actual TE room to work with... I think it's going to be good. And the new center from SMU. All these fans on tRant thought Lebby was a GREAT hire for Miss State. I got ridiculed on here for illuminating his weaknesses. They don't realize it was Kiffin's offense when he was at Ole Miss. If Littrell focuses on balanced attack & clock control, with these athletes on offense.. we will be in great shape.

Running back is a bit of a question mark, though I think we will be fine there. Sawchuck with another year with Schmitty and I'd be surprised if Tatum does not see some burn. I am hearing good things about Tatum. Would love to see some time for the other freshman from CAHS.

I'm really excited to see what the defense does this year. Fingers crossed Gentry can stay healthy for an entire year. So glad Stutsman came back, as we all know that was HUGE for this inaugural season in the SEC. The D-line additions, Boman returning.. this should be a very good team.

Placekicker... could be a yuge problem.

Stuts is going to have a big year. Last year due to B12 screwing us with TV games and so many early on non major channels his work was less noticed nationally. This year with more prime time games and SEC pedigree he’ll get noticed more.

Looking for Peyton Bowen to break out at the other safety spot. With him in Bowman we could have as good a safety tandem as there is in the SEC/country. Depth is there with RSJ and others.

One of the least talked about yet our biggest weakness the past several years. This was a massive hire imo.

Oklahoma's special teams unit is one that necessitates growth this offseason after the unit struggled considerably each of the last two seasons under the tutelage of former special teams analyst Jay Nunez. The Sooners finished last season ranked 94th in special teams in ESPN's SP+ rankings, and the unit was 127th — out of 133 FBS teams — in ESPN's FPI efficiency rankings. That was after the group ranked 39th and 72nd in SP+ and efficiency the year prior.

Sooners Wire 2 Deep OLine

Left Tackle

Starter Michael Tarquin
Backup Jacob Sexton

So much of how Oklahoma’s offensive line looks will depend on if they feel better with Michael Tarquin at left tackle compared to Heath Ozaeta at left guard. In the spring game, they felt more comfortable with Tarquin at left tackle and bumped Jacob Sexton to guard. If needed, Sexton would kick out to tackle.

——

Left Guard

Starter Jacob Sexton
Backup Heath Ozaeta

We’re going to go with Sexton at left guard right now, but if the Sooners need to bump him out to tackle and insert Ozaeta in at guard, they will.

———

Center

Starter Branson Hickman
Backup Josh Bates OR Troy Everett

Center took a hit with Troy Everett’s injury but the Sooners responded with the addition of Branson Hickman. Heading into fall camp, Everett is still recovering from his offseason injury and the Sooners have highly-regarded Josh Bates developing as an option. This will likely be Hickman’s job for 2024.

——-

Right Guard

Starter Febechi Nwaiwu
Backup Eugene Brooks

If there was an offensive lineman who turned heads in spring ball, it was Febechi Nwaiwu. The former freshman All-American could be the next big-time player for Bill Bedenbaugh’s offensive line. Right guard feels like a spot for either Eugene Brooks or Eddy Pierre-Louis to find some playing time this fall.

——-

Right Tackle

Starter Jake Taylor
Backup Spencer Brown

While Spencer Brown arrived from Michigan State with a lot of experience, it looks as if Jake Taylor has earned a leg up in the right tackle position. The competition will extend into fall camp, but Oklahoma has a pair of really good options at right tackle.

Watchability rankings. OU has 6 of top 20. This is difference SEC vs B12.

OU will move the ball. Relying on the defense to force teams to throw and an improved pass rush. 9-3.

IF OU wins either Tenn or texsa, OU will go on to have a good year.
