This is simply not true.

Population of SEC states in 1960:

1. Florida- 4.952 million
2. Georgia- 3.943 million
3. Tennessee- 3.567 million
4. Alabama- 3.266 million
5. Louisiana- 3.257 million
6. Kentucky- 3.038 million
7. Mississippi- 2.178 million

Florida passed Georgia to become the largest state in the Deep South sometime in the mid-1950s. By 1960 it was one of the 10 largest states in the Union.

In 1960, Florida was between Massachusetts and Indiana in population. It may have been the 10th biggest state but the population grew 78% between 1950 and 1960.
