Curious question

How did Kentucky settle on the Wildcats, vs a horse-race-themed mascot?

I understand blue for maybe bluegrass. But how did a Thoroughbred not make the cut?

They settled on the name wildcats in a football game against illinois on the road in 1909 which they won. During a chapel service the head of the military department of the university told a group of students "fought like wildcats." Thats where Kentucky got the wildcats nickname for their athletics.
