The historical line in the sand of the old era and the modern era of college football revolves around the time of integration, scholarship limitations, and population explosions (such as in the South) that drastically changed the game.
More or less you can pencil in 1980 as the year college football officially entered the modern era. Nearly every major poll national title won between the late 1960s and 1979 were won by the same group of programs. 1980 ushered in a new era of teams winning their first ever official championship:
1980 Georgia
1981 Clemson
1982 Penn State
1983 Miami
1984 BYU
1990 Georgia Tech, Colorado
1991 Washington
1993 Florida State
1996 Florida
Nine times in 17 seasons did a team win their first major polling era national title between 1980 and 1996, and three other years in that stretch produced champions from one of those same newbies (1986 Penn State, 1987 and 1989 Miami).
All four blue bloods mentioned previously won titles both during the old era of college football as well as the new era… and most won multiple in both eras.
Of the 13 elite programs just behind… Michigan, USC, Nebraska, Texas, LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee have titles both during the old era as well as the modern era.
Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Penn State, and Clemson all have titles only in the modern era.
