I know, for a fact, that SC was fine with 9 games, even preferred 9 games, as long as the Tennessee, Georgia and Florida games remained on the schedule, along with the sheep humping sister bangers.
They completely fricked everyone with this nonsensical 8 game schedule they came up with not honoring old time games with natural rivals.
SC and UGA have played some 70+ games if I remember correctly ... and BHam didn't honor that.

Which SEC Teams Voted Against a Nine-Game Schedule?
While Oklahoma and Texas didn't have a vote, nine of the 14 current SEC teams voted against the nine-game schedule, including the following:
Alabama
Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Kentucky
Auburn
Arkansas
Mississippi State
Ole Miss
South Carolina

SEC schools who voted in favor of playing 9 conference games:
- Georgia
- Florida
- LSU
- Mizzou
- Texas A&M

There's your issue: you're wanting 4 teams in 3 perm slots.
(Or is "sheep humping sister bangers" your description of Clemson?)
