Phoebus High School (5A powerhouse, just won the Virginia state championship again) coach Bill Dee, on local radio, just said Kiffin (or any UT coach) needs to recruit Virginia to be successful, and that he's off on the wrong foot with Virginia high school coaches.

Missed the first part of the interview but I'm assuming he's talking about Kiffin telling Tahj Boyd (who is the QB at Phoebus) that he doesn't fit the UT system and ought to go elsewhere.

Pretty strong comments, and considering this is Tahj Boyd's coach maybe not reflective of how other H.S. coaches will see it; I thought Kiffin was being up front with the kid, but it will be interesting to see if this really hurts Kiffin in the future. Lots of big-time college players come from the Hampton Roads area (Percy Harvin being the latest). Worth watching to see how UT does in Virginia in the future.

Saban has always been a known a-hole around the hs coaching ranks and that doesn't seem to hurt him.

Tennessee produces very few 1A caliber prospects each year, which is why UT has been a national recruiter forever.

With Saban locking up Alabama, Louisiana being off-limits to UT for years, Richt making it tough for UT in Georgia - all traditional UT recruiting areas - things have become more difficult for UT.

For comparison, this year Rivals lists zero 5-star and only 4 4-star players in the state of Tennessee.

By comparison Virginia has 2 5-star and 8 4-star players, of which UT had 2 4-stars verbally committed before Tahj Boyd decommitted. It sure would help UT to grab a couple of top players a year from Virginia, given the squeeze being put on them in their traditional recruiting areas.

Yeah that could be. He also might just be sticking up for his kid in public; nothing wrong with that.

Probably not a whole lot to this unless other coaches feel the same way.

I heard the interview too this morning. Dee(the coach) sounded pissed. He compared it to calling somebody a good guy just because he admitted having an affair to his wife, instead of hiding it. Tennessee recruits Virginia hard and this is not a good start. Further evidence Kiffin doesn't know what he is in for.

kiffin did tahj a favor. he told him he would probably not be the best fit for his system and didn't want him to get to college and be unhappy. kiffin would have honored tahj's commitment...he never yanked his scholly.

They do have the Virginia Beach area that is stockpiled with athletes.

Michael Vick. Allen Iverson. Aaron Brooks.

The state of Tennessee has Memphis and that's about it. And they have to deal with Ole Miss, Arky, and Bama recruiting it.

I don't care what EzSPiN thinks. Kiffin was a terrible hire. Hired on his daddy's name. Tenn will really regret this.
