In terms of water sports? Or importance to region? Or trade/commercial applications?

If its purely commercial based the only answer is the Mississippi but i definitely wouldnt go wake boarding on the Mississippi.

The Mississippi along the Alton/Grafton/St. Charles corridor is the only place for water sports in the St. Louis metro. I heard another marina was going to be put in place north of the 2nd Chain Of Rocks Bridge, but that could and will be dicey.
