What about giving Saban and folks 3 or so days to get with the core of the team and coming up with a plan and attempting to make them comfortable and incentivize them to help keep the team together and message positive and strong?

I would expect that this happened throughout the entire process. I think Saban, DeBoer, and others have been meeting with players since the retirement announcement (and since DeBoer's announcement as head coach). I honestly don't know if there was a different way to do this that wouldn't have resulted in the same team attrition due to the current CFB climate.

Idk, it seems like Saban retired VERY abruptly.

How was everything not in place before a retirement announcement?

This. The right people knew enough. Coach contemplated retirement last year and decided to give it another go. All of these coaches have the same agent. Listen to Kirby and Saban’s convo at midfield before the SECCG. I’m not saying they knew, but I don’t think they were blindsided.
