Of course, but that is easy to say in retrospect. However, it's becoming more clear that Saban really did go to work one day and found that hiring another round of coaches was just too much and, in a moment of clarity, he said frick it.

He was tired of F with NIL and players and their mothers with the hands out.

Read this article about Tom Izzo and how he is trying to manage NIL.

LINK /

Izzo believes Saban, 72, got out for a lot of NIL and portal-related reasons. They met as coaching pups in the 1980s, when they were still finding their place in their respective sports.

"At the end of the day, the kids are the ones who are going to lose," Izzo said re: NIL legislation and the transfer portal and little resistance to multi-time transfers with immediate eligibility. It's a maxim he's been sharing for a few years now with anyone who will listen.

And that means a few days after the transfer portal closed, Saban opened up our entire roster to the country. A country who would do ANYTHING to see us never win another game ever again.

There is NO doubt programs are erring on the side of overpaying a little bit to get our guys. Adding a ~#3WR is nice for FSU. Raiding our entire roster no matter what player it is is good for EVERYONE.

It did not have to be that way.

How’d the players find out? I’m a wildly chaotic breaking news situation where they all had hundreds of calls and texts from family, friends, and teammates? And recruiters from other schools promising who knows what?

How, in today’s CFB, are the players not notified FIRST? And how is there not a serious effort to sit down the core guys and come up with a plan? Incentivize the plan and message moving forward. Get the whole core you have onboard preaching a positive message and a look to the future as the organization, that is on the same page, looks for the new coach.

Of course players will leave. Some already had before Saban announced.

But whatever we did was not a plan. There doesn’t seem like a single thought was put into anything other than frantically trying to throw money at a player after the snowball was out of control down the mountain.
