They probably did have a good idea who it was going to be. It is likely that DeBoer was the focus from the beginning; that Lanning was never considered (with better talent he was 0-3 vs DeBoer in these last two years). With inferior talent CKD defeated CSS each of the last 2 years in bowl games - Alabama was 1-1.

It was known that Byrne was very interested in CKD before this search even began. He's 5-0 vs Lanning and Sarkisian with less talent in the last 2 years; though more than half of his record was in the tiny NAIA, 104-12 overall is incredible; 25-3 at Wash, 37-9 in D1 is also impressive (in both years before his arrival at Wash and Fresno, they were 4-8, so he did not inherit much). Of course, having Penix join him in Wash was a great help. Nevertheless, no wonder Byrne was interested.

But 3+ years at D1 is not much and don't know what to think about his dazzling, NAIA record, 3 NCs in 5 years, 17-2 playoff record, but every opportunity he's had as a HC has been impressive, if not spectacular.
