Not they didn't. Pre-BCS there was only one....MAYBE two games that could decide the National Championship. So, what has changed? We now have two games that can decide the National Championship. The mechanics haven't changed at all.

You're missing the point. It didn't matter to fan bases if the game wasn't for the national championship. They loved the opportunity to play in notable bowls with great matchups. That doesn't exist anymore, ironically due to opinions like yours.

So why does it matter now?

Opinions like mine? I was perfectly happy without the BCS. Then I was happy with the 4 team playoff.
I am not happy with expanding to 12.

That said, the difference is the Portal, NIL and big bucks in the NFL. Players are afraid to risk a supposed future to an injury in a bowl game so they opt out. Fans are not going to pay major dollars to pay to see a game played by 2nd and 3rd stringers. A lot of fans don't want to sit in front of a TV and watch 2nd and 3rd stringers play.

It is what it is. All of the younger fans have been screaming for change every 3-4 years and this is what change has gotten us.
