I’ll add I’m not sure what the history is on this, but I’ve always thought it was strange that Texas Tech bucked the trend of ____ Tech being the school with the strong engineering and technical programs a la CalTech, MIT, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, etc…

During the 1921 legislative session, the Texas legislature was debating the location of the state mental hospital and Texas Tech. There were a number of cities competing for these institutions, but Wichita Falls won: we got the insane asylum. Lubbock got Tech.

But seriously, Texas Tech never got the funding that those schools received. It wasn't the Land Grant school, and didn't share in the oil money of the Permanent University Fund.
