Kief had a good take on the Florida-On3 when asked if Potato Head = Napier:
quote:

Keith Niebuhr said: No, because this head coach actually works hard and gives a crap. And he does have some talent coming into Year 3.

Harsin was the worst head coach I've ever written about. The coaches that weren't his boys didn't like him. He didn't have a QB on the roster. Ran off Bo Nix. Couldn't recruit -- and didn't appear to try very hard. Wasn't a people person. Etc.

So many red flags with that guy.

It may not sound like much, but I think Billy Napier cares.

and then when asked about Gus

quote:

Gus was on Year 8.

After 2017, he got hammered on the trail.

What happens is, the negative noise actually does have an impact. Once you are perceived to be on the hotseat, it's a killer on the recruiting trail. So whereas he once beat Georgia for guys, he now was competing with Va. Tech. So your recruiting suffers. And then your roster gets worse. It becomes a cycle that is hard to break.

Now, you have the transfer portal to POSSIBLY help you.

Maybe over simplifications but they both seem pretty spot on (2me) for their brevity.

(BTW: I really like Kieth.)

except for the fact that during 2018-19 cycles he was considered unfireable because of his ridiculous buyout

in fact i doubt there was any serious hotseat talk about him until he got his arse handed to him (again) by UGa in 2020

Yep. Only two other pieces on Malzahn. All-in-all there should be no hard feelings about the guy it was just time to both move on.

(1) Some reason he could not recruit OLine
(2) He didn’t adapt his schemes to rule changes and personnel whereas Saban has repeatedly adjusted
(3) He was a guy pulling his hamstring on a kickoff and/or a ticky tack PI call away from a national title
