Shorter arc makes zone much more feasible in college too. It is not impossible for long wing players to help inside and get out to contest a shot behind the arc.

Certainly not typically. But I would at least rather throw a few wrinkles and try something different to get a team out of their rhythm when we are that outmatched by athletic guards. Zone isn't great against the 3 but when every ball handler on the other team is beating the man to man easily causing your entire defense to break down, I'd be willing to try and see if they could shoot over it.
Bottom line is our guards this year are just limited in terms of individual defensive ability and we don't have a strong defensive front court to make up for it either. Not a ton Oats can do, but I think he could switch up the defensive strategy a bit more at times. Maybe he has tried zone at practice and it's been a complete disaster. Who knows.
