While I agree with you in principle, I’d be pretty upset as a coach if one of my guys lit a dude up and got a 15 yard penalty for it. It would be subjectively up to the ref if a guy’s signal was valid or,not.

The reality that two different signals were given created a problem for the players sprinting down the field to be able to figure out what to do.

The 2018 fair catch rule change was put in to avoid kickoff injuries. The Tennessee players created a situation where there was a higher probability for an injury to occur.
