The Dawgs are 5-0 (2-0) just like we expected, yet, the standard has not been met....
Ahhhhh, it's October once again ya'll and the Georgia faithful's feeling that 'ol Munson pessimism once again...
In some respects, rightfully so. The defenese hasn't caused havok like it should nor have they stopped the run, which is a Kirby trademark nearly his entire time in Athens. The O-Line has been way below standard at run blocking overall, and the age old football problem of injuries, which has hit our team in a big way relative to the past two seasons.
Yet, I believe such issues can be solved. Each element I just mentioned has shown flashes and/or are improving: The defense caught up to Rattler and Throne by the very end of the game with picks and the run D at least improved in the 2nd half relative to each first halfs of each conference game. The O-Line started to wear down each conference foe in the 2nd half by running the ball on must have drives. And McConkey and Bullard (two MUST haves for this team to met the standard) both returned and perfomed well.
1st Quarter has been a pain in the azz. Especially with that fricking horrible new clock rule. In my opinion, teams across the nation should start treating the first drive of the game as almost like the drive before the end of the half. We gotta score on the first drive simple as that.
For sure, we have lost a lot of talent....we have lost endless names over the past two years...yet the Dawgs who are still on this team.. I have the upmost confidence in righting this ship in the way we know it dang well should be: imo these eleven guys in no particular order are the ones that I am feeling good about:
B. Bowers: Enough Said
Sedrick Van Pran: The top guy returning from last year's team. Sedrick is a great talent and has lived up to his billing as the top center coming out of the country. His precense has been underrated in keeping our new QB calm down the stretch of each close game, as his snaps are clean and the pass blocking has been elite. The O-Line overall has not been up to par, but I feel the leader of the boys up front will keep us stable enough and if you see some footage of him in the lockeroom and on the practice field, you know he's ready to keep pushing his fellow lineman forward to do more to improve in the run game.
D. Edwards: This is our old school workhorse. He's not the same talent as some of the greats at UGA's most rich position, but for what he lacks in raw talent he makes up for in his heart as this kid just keeps chugging along and iss giving us solid performances. He's just now getting to 100 percent and this year could be big for him in lieu of the inuries at RB
K. Milton: My most contrarian take and I won't blame anyone who objects because he's been injury plagued his entire career and his lack of vision has not improved it seems. Yet, I think Milton is someone we still very much need. He still has enough talent to give us a great performance in at least one game down the stretch when we really need it...much like last year's SEC title game. He career has been disapointing, but I think he's still grinding hard for us and can surprise from time to time when we really need it. Hoping for as much health for him as I can.
J. Bullard: This man just came off a decent injury and still looked great...though he lost contain on some plays for sure last weekend....yet, I think he's the clear leader of the defense. When he talks, he just sounds and feels like a great Georgia defensive player.
M. Starks: We may not have an obvious 1st rounder on defense this year, but Starks will certainly be one come 2025 draft time. Kid will have more picks this year when you least expect it.
L. McConkey: White lightning is back in the house. His importance to the team can be understated, I believe his leadership is underrated. The way he was engaged while sidelined reminded me of Nolan Smith during his respective injury last year. Ladd was never a top recruit, but he plays like one and it battle tested in big game situations. Expect him to grab more 3rd and longs when we need it this year
M. Rosemy-Jacksaint Or....."Roseman-Saintjack" as Gary Dainelson likes to call him because he's so obsecure. He's always been an unsung hero in run blocking, he does the little things well....a piece that is not glorious but needed. He really impressed melast week after he had a career day but told the media he didn't care about stats but Ws. We may not have the elite WRs, but this man is an elite teammate.
M. Williams: Mykel will bring the damn heat by the end of the season. The havok that we really need on defense will only be met if this man can get in the QBs face and I'm very confident that he will make many more QBs uncomfortable in the coming games. Like Starks, he could end up being a 1st rounder one day by '25 if he continues to develop.
D. Bell: Perhaps the defintion of eating off the floor. There's something to be said about a kid who will go and play some power back for us when needed...and in his limited carries he's done very well. There will be key plays throughout the season where Bell will come through..on the air and now on the ground.
C. Beck: The man behind the controls is new. He looked nervous in his first start but since then he has righted the ship each time it has gotten off course. It's not easy to build chemistry with WRs in real time, but Carson is slowly but surely doing just that. He's completing a lot of balls, his stats are good across the board in the SEC, save Passing Touchdowns, which I believe are coming down the stretch. If Carson has more games where he's got 300 and 3 TDs, then I think we'll be alright. The kid has shown moxie in two different pressure situations, he is a a meance on 3rd and long when you really, really need it. He has waited his turn for a good reason. I don't know if he'll ever be a great QB, they don't come around very often, but if it continutes to do what he's doing but combined with a faster start, then I think he's more than good enough to get us another national title
There are many more I could name, but I've ranted enough. We aren't perfect this year, but no one really is. I'm ready for some of these fights and the kids we got on this team this year may not have the same amount of talent, but they're still quite talented and will improve throughout the season.......
.....And maybe try and not turn the damn ball over for fricks sake. That would be nice.
LINK Check out the footage of the team from the South Carolina game. They are poised and ready to go. They're ready to eat off the floor.
Go Dawgs

I'm not necessarily arguing with you on this, but when this is said I am always curious.
What is the standard? They are such a vague and subjective terms, how will we know when we have met "the standard"?
Are there scores we much reach? Statistics? Eye Test?
What standard are you talking about?

I agree completely. The worst kept secret in CFB is that Brock Bowers isn't human and can see the Matrix when he's on the field. Keep getting the ball to him until the other team can prove that they can stop him. Auburn's secondary made some manly plays that kept Bowers from scoring a couple of times... until they couldn't. This should be the standard.
If they finally lock down Bowers, then you will have a former 4/5* guy(s) open. Hit them.

Now, here's the question - they do that, do the other players not play as hard/give up because they know they are useless?

I wouldn't say so because that's their opportunity to shine.
Someone said in one of the in-game threads a couple of weeks ago, "If the coaches don't get the ball to Bowers once every three plays, we're seriously fricking up."

We can sit here and pretend that the standard is something arbitrary, but it's not, so lets replace the word standard with potential. We're winning, but we still haven't met our potential... domination is the name of the game here...which has been the standard in our national title runs....our audacity to dominate and put games away by the 3rd quarter. Ask Kirby Smart if we're playing to our potential. We're not.
I understand for fans it's "but we're winning" that's great, but I hope the players don't think the same way...Stackhouse or Brinson even commented before the game that the defense hasn't reached it's full potential yet.
It could be stats yeah...people say stats don't matter and to an extent they don't, but in many respects they do, especially when Auburn out gains Georgia in rushing yards. Our run stop not being as good is simply not meeting our potential/standard relative to the past few seasons

I mean, are you saying you cannot define what the standard is. If you can't pin the standard down, then it is arbitrary.
Wht you consider the standard may be different for someone else. And a third person may define it differently from the previous two.
I am trying to figure out what you mean when you say "the standard". If we don't know what the standard is , how will we know if/when we reach it?
quote:This narrows it somewhat. I would argue we did not meet the standard against Missouri last season or Ohio State or Kentucky. Did we meet the standard against Kent State last season? (39-22) Not based on the criteria you set forth.
domination is the name of the game here...which has been the standard in our national title runs.
We certainly did not dominate Auburn this past game, but we beat everybody else by 41,42,28 points. I would argue South Carolina kept it reasonably close but, we dominated them in the second half.
If you want to say we are not meeting "the standard" then we need to know what "the standard" is. Because honestly? It appears as if you are not going by anything tangible. You are going by feelings.
quote:I easily see your point here. We are struggling more to stop the run. Mainly, in my opinion, it is up the middle. We had Jordan Davis two years ago and had 2-3 big time run stuffers last year. I think we will start seeing Jamaal Jarrett and Jordan Hall more and more in the middle.
Our run stop not being as good is simply not meeting our potential/standard relative to the past few seasons
