I think the deal was this: at the time, everyone had cable, and you expected the local cable companies to have the conference channel.
Rutgers gets the Big 10 Network into NY/NJ, so a massive deal.
Same thing with USC/UCLA, you get it into the LA/So Cal market.

I know locally here, SEC Network is a default setup with Cox.

Now, with things transitioning over to streaming, and pick-your-deals everywhere, I don't think it's gonna work out well.
