They told Michael that they wanted to adopt him.
Then lied and said he was 18 and unadoptable.
And convinced him to sign a conservatorship explicitly telling Michael that it was the same thing.

avoid potentially impacting his eligibility.

How would adoption be any different for eligibility?

Oher was also coached by freeze. Of course he’s sleazy. Whole situation is cringy but sounds like it’s a case of biting the hand that fed you

Sean Tuohy told the online The Daily Memphian in an interview Monday that the family sought conservatorship to avoid violating NCAA recruiting rules since he, a former Ole Miss basketball player, could be classified as a booster.
Just looked it up. Makes sense. It's pretty obvious that regardless of what was projected publicly or said by Oher, that they didn't want to adopt him. Likely because they are worth >$100mm. They were looking for the simplest way possible to preserve his ability to go to OM after Oher had lived with them.

Realistically an 18 year old person, assuming they aren't special needs, would know the difference between being adopted and a conservatorship when you see the paperwork. They were paying for the majority of his living expenses... he didn't want that to stop and wanted to be able to go to OM, and it would allow him to get typically impermissible benefits from a booster throughout his time at OM. After that he could simply file to end the conservatorship at any time - he was an NFL player worth millions.

The book's author.

"What I feel really sad about is I watched the whole thing up close," Lewis said. "They showered him with resources and love. That he’s suspicious of them is breathtaking. The state of mind one has to be in to do that — I feel sad for him."

They may have cut what he views as a "bad deal" with the movie studio, but that's all in hindsight. It will be easy to do an accounting of the film's profits and see what Oher made or didn't make.
