Turkey's involvement in the First World War is another example of incredibly smart people doing incredibly stupid things.

In this case, Winston Churchill, First Sea Lord of the British Empire. Churchill had every fact, every nuance of the naval situation at his finger tips. He truly had a brilliant mind.

Sadly, he was also the drizzling sh*t when it came to actual military matters. To make matters worse, he thought he was a genius there as well. Which is how you got Turkey entering the war.

Two German cruisers had the misfortune of being caught in the Mediterranean when the balloon went up. They were, almost immediately, detected by British ships. Churchill promptly wrote out his orders on the matter and the language is exquisite. The man was a gifted writer.

The orders, however, were garbage, setting out a myriad of tasks and goals for the naval officers on the scene and most of the orders contradicted one another. So the two ships, vastly outgunned, slipped away, made it to a Turkish port and promptly "volunteered" for the Turkish navy. An enraged, and embarrassed, Britain bombarded some Turkish forts (unsuccessfully) and Turkey entered the war.
