Northwestern's "success" (great for them, extremely average at best for a P5 program) very clearly stemmed from Defensive Coordinator Mike Hankwitz, not Pat Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald was at a school with extreme academic restrictions and he oversaw the development of well below average talent into solid football players

He got them bowl eligible 10 times, when in the previous 123 years of existence they only attended 6 bowl games. He won two division titles at the big 10 version of Vandy. That sort of success can't just be attributed to a coordinator.

Five of those six bowl games occured in the decade prior to Fitzgerald becoming head coach, and three of those seasons also included a Big Ten championship. Pat had two bad years prior to Mike Hankwitz's arrival in Evanston, decent success while Hankwitz was Defensive Coordinator and two incredibly abysmal seasons after his departure culminating in this debacle.

Fitzgerald without Hankwitz is an incredibly impressive 14-34.

Georgia Tech should hire him as a defensive analyst.
