It’s a fair question, as evidenced by TCU’s presence in the playoff. Nobody in America outside of the state of Texas thought TCU was one of the 4 best teams in the country last year, and Georgia proved they didn’t belong.

It’s funny that TCU has been the target of Gump propaganda talking points in this, because they were actually the third seed in last year’s playoff. #4 Ohio State was the team that “got in” over Alabama.

Being selected for the playoffs is based on what a team demonstrates during the regular season and conference championship games. The Gumps instead want to selectively use the results of the championship game and a meaningless exhibition bowl game to say the deserved
to be in when the results of the season showed they clearly did not. Alabama’s argument aimed at TCU also ignores the fact that the Frogs beat #2 seed Michigan,
who no one challenged as being undeserving of being in the playoffs.

Judging based on reg season and CC, TCU controlled the game better vs common opponent Texas and their only loss was in an extra game they earned vs Bama not qualifying for its CC. Alabama’s case of being in over OSU was better than arguing it deserved to be in over TCU.

Alabama, based on their regular season, was not more deserving of being in the playoff than Tennessee last year - losing head-to-head to the Vols and having the
same record.
