The GT folks want you to believe that Bear Bryant was partly the reason along with the scholarship issue.
But the real reason and the only reason was $$$ and greed. GT resented having to share the spoils of their success with the other conference schools. Back then bowl money was a huge amount for the college each year.
GT thought they could go independent (similar to Notre Dame) and reap a big windfall. Pure greed was the reason they left the SEC. Worst decision by any university on any level in the history of college athletics.
And that is the reason they will never be allowed to return to the SEC. They made their bed and now they get to continue to wallow in it.

I'm a Tech grad and I mostly agree with this statement (though I wouldn't consider it the worst decision).
