How do you get an unnamed lake officially named, as an official place name?

I don’t know for sure, but believe it would have to be submitted through the Georgia (or whatever State) Department of Natural Resources, who would then file it with the USGS….
I know that’s been a big deal lately with Lanier and Buford Dam potential BS renaming.

Why would they rename Lake Lanier? Wasn't the guy a poet? Not a confederate general.

He was a poet, but also served as a Confederate soldier...it's BS. Same with Buford, just foot soldier that after the war, created jobs and rebuilt as head of the railroad.
