"the best team they did play in the regular season was a Rutgers team that finished 6th in the Big East"

Actually Todd, the best team we beat in the regular season was Louisville. Second best was probably USM, who had a heckuva program in those days. Third best was La Tech, who was also hot at the time. Rutgers was probably in the bottom half if you rank that year's Tulane schedule from toughest to easiest. You are giving Rutgers credit only for being in what was then a "BCS conference." That's like saying "hey we must be fantastic, because we beat an SEC team" after a victory over Vandy instead of Alabama (and no disrespect to Vandy, but facts are facts).

Bottom line - we beat everyone we played. As an Auburn fan who ought to remember the dissing Auburn got from the pollsters after an undefeated 2004 season, you ought to know better. Auburn has every right to claim a share of the national championship for 2004 - no one beat them. So does Tulane for 1998.
