Said way down yonder
In the land of cotton
Old times there
Ain't near as rotten
As they are
On this damned old L.A. street
Then he drew a dying breath
Laid his head 'gainst my chest
Please Lord, take his soul
Back home to Dixie
And I sang Dixie
As he died
People just walked on by
As I cried
The bottle had robbed him
Of all his Rebel pride
So I sang Dixie
As he died
In the land of cotton
Old times there
Ain't near as rotten
As they are
On this damned old L.A. street
Then he drew a dying breath
Laid his head 'gainst my chest
Please Lord, take his soul
Back home to Dixie
And I sang Dixie
As he died
People just walked on by
As I cried
The bottle had robbed him
Of all his Rebel pride
So I sang Dixie
As he died

I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar…
I’m the son and heir of nothing in particular.
How Soon Is Now?

Half my family was in Italy until the 1910s. The other half were pre-Revolutionary War immigrants. I had relatives fight in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Mexican American War, but almost to the man, my direct descendants either hid in the hills around Winston County or fought for the 1st AL Cavalry (Union Scouts).
My great-great-great grandfather gave was the preacher at the "secession" meeting when Winston County opted not to secede from the Union. His statement was "I just can't see fighting against the flag that George Washington and our kin fought for."
That said, there is no better place to live than the South. Its past has dark, shameful stains, but so does everywhere else. The continuities of the goodness in its culture and heritage are the best parts of America.

It's not a surprise when Prussians set the foundation for our drill and ceremony. But, it did change quite quickly when the Nazi party came to be.

He was an honorable man in spite of being on the wrong side of history. His biggest regret was not his loyalty to the Union vs VA per se, but that it meant breaking his oath. He died with it weighing on his soul.
True remorse at going back on his word above all. It's hard to evaluate historical context given the bias of our mindsets today.
