It actually won't matter with the new playoff rules. The playoff doesn't differentiate.

The top 6 conference champions get in, regardless of P5/G5. The top 4 get byes. After that it's the top ranked teams to fill out the bracket to 12.

The difference in designation ceases to matter.

Yeah, semantics aside, I guess I'm just curious if they would deserve an AQ spot simply by virtue of being a former P5 conference in name-only.

Would it make sense to give AQs and byes to fewer teams (like 4) and fill in with more of the remaining top ranked teams (8)?

As it stands, in this potential scenario, UNLV winning the former Pac-12 by beating Nevada and SMU would carry as much weight as Georgia winning the SEC.

All this to say, I really don't like AQs.
