Steele did shepherd Smart in 2007 before stepping aside in 2008 with Smart becoming DC. Saban has been trying to recreate that magic.

Pete Golding's early years mirror Smart a lot, he just kinda plateaued at Bama. Unfortunately his "veteran presence" at Co-DC was a glorified bagman in Lupoi.

He was a good DC, he couldn't really push beyond that when it was needed...

I do like seeing Saban talk about "fundamentals" and "execution" when referring to Steele in the past.

Like he's bringing in a hitting coach to help fix the swing that was once there.
