Lawrence Johnson

Moving over to the defense brings us now to Lawrence Johnson. Comes to the plains as a transfer via Purdue and probably has the least amount of fanfare with all the transfers rolling in at the time he selected Auburn as his destination. He’s actually one of my favorite portal guys tho.

Johnson gives me the vibe of just a chaos agent. Both good and bad. He’s a shoot the gap type player and doesn’t always play fundamentally sound in his gap. But he does make plays in the form of tackles for loss and such but also takes himself out. I’ll let coach Roberts and crew decide if they want to change that behavior or not. I think it brings a role not on the team outside of maybe M’ba. He can get himself out of position at times as well. I like risk takers on defense especially against teams with offense that just March up and down the field.

I expect Johnson to compete at the 3 tech that Harris starts at now. Not sure how far up the depth chart he can get but his play reminds me a litttle of Colby Wooden. Just has a knack for getting into the backfield from inside.

Elijah McAllister

Elijah transferred from Vandy to AU and provides immediate depth at a position that lacked experience and depth. The edge spot. He’s a big bodied edge player that isn’t particularly dynamic but can rush the passer and set the edge as well. With the lack of experience any transfer edge would have been a blessing. One with experience in conference is a huge plus. He knows the ins and outs of the long season an SEC schedule can be. He was a captain on the Vandy squad and will probably be a team leader at AU as well however I doubt he will be a captain.

Elijah is not a 15 sack a season guy or doesn’t appear to be but he fills one of the biggest needs the roster has at the edge position. Behind him will be Dylan Brooks and Faulk so McAllister seems like a great guy to motivate these younger players. Team leaders and positional leaders are incredibly important to a new staff and even tho he’s a new comer I expect him to fill that role as well. I expect McAllister to start at Edge.
