I'm not reading all these posts and I am pretty sure it's been noted, but Saban was following Mike Shula and his (lack of) recruiting, and the team was on probation for the text books. Saban's first year was predictably not good because of those factors. Apparently the official record for that year is 2-6 after vacated wins. All 6 of the losses were by 7 points or less.

Kirby Smart was following Richt, who recruited well.

Yup, it’s been posted as well as how much more experience Saban had than Kirby when they both took over their current program. Naturally neither side gives a shite
