Might be a rookie HC mistake but he has every right to hire his own guys. He’d be smart to keep/hire veteran dudes who have been through the fire. Given the circumstances, hiring him was the right move at the time. We’ll know if he deserved and was ready for the job in a year or two.

What part of putting a staff in place that will fit whatever system he wants to run is a rookie mistake?
