if your son was a surefire early NFL draft pick, would you advise him to play in a non CFP bowl game and risk getting ACL'd?

If he wanted to, sure. I certainly wouldn’t “advise” against it. I’d respect his decision to go to war with his team mates and represent his university one more time.
Again, when and how did this mindset so rapidly change? Was Saban right about how greatly diminishing the CFP would be to bowl games?
ETA: Of note, rookies stood to lose more money 10+ years ago, before the rookie salary rules were in place, and virtually nobody opted out of bowl games during that era.
