The way it used to be was saban got to keep most all of them for 4 years and hoard them from other teams. There was much more depth.

Instead of watching a Drew Sanders at Arkansas tearing it up, 10 years ago at alabama he would've been an elite backup and provided depth before eventually becoming a starter his senior season.

Guys like Cohen that started and got significant playing time, they decide to heck with the competition and transfer out of the program to be a full time starter. A significant piece of depth hits the road.

Aaron Anderson, the #35 player in the 2022 class (#1 overall player in Louisiana) decides to hit the road to LSU after not getting playing time his Freshman year.

The examples go on and on, and will continue to.

In today's world, a guy like Reuben Foster who saw little action asides from special teams his first few years hits the transfer portal well before sitting around at alabama for 4 full years.

He can get a starting position earlier and make it to the NFL earlier now.
