Yes because several trusted sources who were there told me. They had no reason to lie and are very unbiased.

Unless the Commandant was present and heard the warning or gave it himself, he only knows what he was told. The same with your sources. They may be be telling what they were told and believe that to be true. They may be right. It may also be true that the players didn’t hear the warning. The ultimate responsibility is not on the players but on the cannon crew. They should not have fired.
