Part of that, besides the open west end, is that it was built in a ravine between two hills. The entire 100 level is just poured concrete on two opposing hillsides and so when you enter you are at the top of what was the original stadium. So it doesn't loom large visually and you can't even see it really until you are right up on it.

We consider this a feature of brilliant, timeless stadium design, but YMMV.
