Former Alabama Players (Nick Gentry, Marvin Constant, Reggie Ragland, Bo Scarborough) Share Their Thoughts
They go IN and it is glorious.

Best post all week! They are definitely not sunshine pumpers. Telling it like it is.

Pretty sure they’ve heard enough without more dog piling on at this point. None of this is gonna make anything better, but continue I guess.

When’s the last time you can recall former players openly criticizing current players and the state of the Alabama football program?
Pretty significant that they are taking it to this level. If they feel this strongly about it, something is wrong and it absolutely needs to have attention called to it.

So them talking shite is going to just randomly make these dudes less anxious pregame? We lost because our D coordinator doesn’t know how to counter someone scheming WR’s on our safeties who struggle in pass coverage. Not cause they were anxious

The reality is the reason these kids have anxiety is because they don't actually believe in that leadership or the gameplan they are giving them. Anyone who has played ball will understand what I mean when I say that.
All that talk is great but attacking the players won't change much... the ones criticizing the most didn't play for Bill O'Brien and Pete Golding.
Players are reflection of their coaches. I know I was.
In the end we lost our identity the moment our headcoach settled for mediocrity in leadership positions managing his talent.
If we're honest he has yet to take responsibility for that.

Exactly.
We also lost because our special teams coordinator apparently can't get our returner to wave players off a bad punt or teach players to fall on fumbles.
We also lost because our offensive coordinator killed multiple drives leading to field goals and the last drive couldn't use common sense to center a ball for a kicker who struggles to make kicks from the right hash.
If someone needs a swift kick in the arse it's these shitty leaders wasting some amazing talent. Maybe if our head (Saban) picked better leaders we would be on an undefeated streak en route to a three peat.

I definitely will agree with you here that these dudes in the video like Gentry, Ragland, etc had the mentality they did because the coaches they had instilled it in them. Something went horribly wrong with the culture of the program, and yes it falls squarely on the head coach.

Ystar and TiderNAL make great points.

To me the aura of invincibility was lost Jan 9, 2017 against Clemson. Bama took the lead late, but Watson and Clemson marched down the field for the win. Bama has had juggernaut offensive teams since and has won multiple NCs since then, but as far as defense, something was lost that night. It was shocking then to see a Bama defense not rise up and slam the door shut when it was all on the line...and that was a stacked defense...but after that night it seems like we lost something on defense... swagger, fear factor, whatever.

Other teams aren’t scared anymore. They relish the opportunity because they know what it means for their program. Of course we aren’t doing anything to make them scared.
I agree. Something is awry with the culture. Saban has cooled with age but we also have two coordinators that don’t command respect. BoB is up in the booth and Golding isn’t exactly Kirby or Muschamp on the sidelines.

Totally agree with the sentiment that the anxiety comes from not trusting that the staff is putting them in a position whip the other team's arse.

You blame that game on the defense, when the offense could not move the ball for shite? Also, how do you defend pick plays if the refs won’t call them?
Lane Kiffin is the reason Alabama didn’t repeat that year. The son of a bitch got shitfaced and went to strip clubs in Atlanta the night before the Semifinal against Washington. He already had one foot out the door to Boca Raton. Yes, Sark was a pretty good guy to have as a fallback, but even he was crucified after that game.

Whatever happened to
“Dominate your opponent and make their arse quit”
I want that coach back!
Someone should ask Saban about his other quote
“This is not the end, this is the beginning”
He needs to do a little soul searching…starting with himself!!!

Pruitt had been hired by rocky top and Golding joined the staff that winter.
From 2018 onward Golding has been co-DC or lone DC.

What’s more worrisome to me is, Saban’s press conferences have become rinse and repeat and more “coach speak”. Just a different demeanor about him, almost resignation. Does anyone believe this group is going to “learn” to be hateful in a week? Or self-determine to fix all the problems in a week. Is Saban mis-reading the team when he says “they are responding well”?
"The big emphasis for the team this week is playing to win. There's a difference between playing to win and playing to keep from getting beat."
"They're capable, but having the capacity to do something and the capability of doing it is two different things. And we need to work on our capability of playing with more consistency."
Saban on team's response in practice this week: "I think they're responding. ... We've gotta have the right mindset and we've gotta get more positive about how we approach beating the other team. That's something that we're working on this week."

So what Bama defense has been truly feared by opponents since 2017? Who took over the defense from 2018 on?
There is one person, for whatever reasons, that has destroyed the aura of the Bama defense. Everyone knows who it is and he needs to be gone yesterday.

In the end we lost our identity
During the height of our run, Scott Cochran was a critical part of our identity. Everyone on this board loved Scott Cochran ...until they didn't. People blaming injuries on him. I don't know about that. What I do know is that for years we had guys...especially in the trenches...who made their asses quit...physically, mentally, emotionally. Now we're playing with anxiety. Now we can't get enough push out of an OL to get a half yard when we have to have it. Say what you want, but I'd be thrilled to have him back.

You referenced the CFP Final game from the 2016 season, when Jeremy Pruitt was the DC— to make a point about Pete Golding.
ETA: Pruitt was DC in 2017, when BAMA won the CFP Championship.

We had a kid panic and try to pick up a punt that was about to be dead, leading to a TD on the next play. That's anxiety. We had receivers drop balls. That's anxiety. We had false starts. That's anxiety. All of those contributed hugely to the loss.
Gibbs catches that pass and we win the game. Would you bet your left nut that he didn't drop it because he was anxious?
