Why would play zone defense?

Notes on individuals
- For Tennessee, Hyatt is by far their main target when they identify man to man coverage (which makes sense due to his speed). Of their 25 MtM targets, he has 13 of them.
Hyatt in Man to Man - 11 catches/13 targets, 217 yds, 16.7 Yd Per Target
Everyone Else - 14 catches/22 targets, 182 yds, 8.3 Yd Per Target
- For us, Kool-Aid has been nuts in MtM : 1 catch on 11 targets for 17 yds, 1.5 Yd Per Target
- Arnold has been targetd less (or we've left him alone in MtM less) : 1 catch on 5 targets for 6 yds, 1.2 Yd Per Target

Why would play zone defense?
For one, we almost never play straight man to man across the board because it isn't our defense. For two, if you play straight man to man then you better have a plan for the QB taking off, and in 2022 most QBs are equipped to take off. Just from our schedule that would include Texas, ULM, Arkansas and Texas A&M for sure.
I'm not entirely sure how this is tracked as it is a combined number of individuals - so they may be attempting to note what coverage individuals are in on each play (because some coverages are certain guys in man and other guys in pattern match zone). And I'm guessing it isn't entirely accurate, either, as it's someone who isn't calling the coverages guessing the coverage from watching film.

Holy cow. This defense is elite, and the best defense we’ve had in years.

Kedon Slovis is also the only truly developed passer that they have faced. Those are not good numbers for them

Whatever we do they adjustments or plays need to come in fast bc last year twice we got burned for tds when the defender was looking to the sideline still
