I went to as many games as I could when I was at LSU as I knew there would only be a small window of my life that I could get $12 tickets to LSU home games, even for big rivals and conference opponents. I'm not sure how much students are being charged for them now at LSU or other schools.
But I will say, the student section being in the endzone made it kind of difficult to see what was going on when play was happening near the other endzone, so you're watching the jumbotron a lot. TV offers a superior view of the action pretty much at all times. So it wouldn't shock me if kids at these schools like to go to the tailgates to drink and eat and soak up the hype and energy on campus, but either stay at the tailgate to watch the game on TV or go back to their dorms or a party for the actual game.
