Why do athletic directors use search firms when hiring football coaches?

Athletic directors are paid very will in a specific niche role with the university. Its not like there is even close to a fail proof algorithm in place to prevent the hire from being a catastrophic disaster. Look at the turntable that's been the ncaa coach carousel for years. These guys are not exactly finding hidden gems either. I feel like with the title of Athletic Director, searching for a coach should probably be your responsibility and we shouldn't go subbing that work out.

So they can take some of the blame off themselves when they suck

Its so they can say they have not had conversations with a coach unless they want the job.
Its to save face, thats all.

Hard to believe people are that small minded.

Search firm does the vetting and acts as intermediary so people can honestly say they haven’t talked with XYZ

100% agree - it's even more egregious when they use a search firm and hire the assistant to become coach.
Bro, just spend the 2 million elsewhere.
