A team regularly making the NCAA tournament is a big deal in the SEC.

We just need a recruiter for aau and prep schools and a magician in the portal.

We did that.

I get that but the SEC is getting better and better in basketball and more teams are putting more resources into basketball (mainly because FB revenue)

AU and OM already have new facilities and I believe MSU is breaking ground or planning to and Bama is also looking at the feasibility of a new place.

Gotta step up

that may be something to look at down the line, but a new arena is way, WAY down the list of priorities right now. We have proven, multiple times, we can win and win big with a good coach. Our problem is we keep hiring coaches that aren't good.

Is the sec improving? In the end, looked like a pretty standard year. Kust a lot more hype.

We can say they are improving after the tourney results....

I for years felt we needed to replace steg but the recent remodels make it a fine facility for Athens. Should have done it in conjunction with the classic center in the 90s.

I think it is and we'll obviously get a better idea when the tourney starts but there's no doubt schools are investing more and higher profile recruits are staying home in the SEC.

It's a shithole no matter how much remodeling it goes through. The first impression from the outside screams 1968

Auburn's killing it with kids from our own backyard and if ya don't their new facility plays a part in those kids decision I don't know what to tell ya. Both Schlabach and Chip Towers have said the facility plays a factor in our 20 year slide.

ETA Bama's BOT approves new basketball facility

So their new facility has absolutely nothing to do with their recruiting success?

So all these schools are wasting hundreds of millions on new facilities and upgrades?

Strange

BTW I said it "plays a part" in their success and it's silly to think otherwise.

I think the biggest jump the SEC made was after SC & Arkansas joined. Ark was a power with Nolan and won the Dance. SC I recall also made the final 4. I think prior to 85 it was Kentucky and everyone else. LSU, Bama, Auburn, and Ga had a few nice runs in there.

every tiny thing about your school "plays a part" all the way down to the dorms and dining halls. But your arena doesnt' play AS MUCH of a role as some may think. AU is winning becuase they have a great coach and elite recruiter, not becuase they built a new arena. Bama has had a lot more success than us lately with a worse arena believe it or not. I've been to Coleman 4 or 5 times and it makes Stegeman look like jerry world. Duke plays in the equivalent of a middle school gym but that hasn't hindered their success.

Our biggest problem in the way of a new facility is there isn't really anywhere to put it. We either have to completely tear down Stegeman and displace 3 sports all at once for who knows how long, or try to build somewhere off campus. Neither of those is a really ideal option considering it's not even really a NEED. What we NEED is to get a good coach that will be here longer than 5 years, something that hasn't happened here since the 80s. Let's start with that and see where it goes.

I think Stegman has greatly improved. When I was in school they still had the stage in the background. The improvements I think around 2009-10 were good. I went to McCamish for the Ga-Tech game a few years ago and I really wasn't that impressed. Tech pays a lot higher prices for basketball games and I assume part of that is to pay for that arena. If they built a new arena I think it would have to be in the existing spot. The year they spent building we would probably have to try to move home games to Gwinnett arena. I think if anything they would just do more renovations and add what they have at Stegman.
