Childress was great at getting commits from pitchers who had no shot of coming to campus (Kershaw, Shelby Miller come to mind, there’s others I’m not thinking of).
Ahh yes, the Smoke Laval approach.

And those guys aren’t really losses because everyone understood they weren’t ever going to come to school. There was little in between with Childress though it seemed, with a large drop from those caliber of recruits to the guys we ended up with. This was especially true in the later years.
When we would get some recruits who were probably on the fence between pro ball and school, it seemed extremely rare we would end up with them. Nick Williams is an example I’ll use off the top of my head who was kind of in that area, I think a 3rd or 4th rounder and signed for probably a few hundred thousand. That’s the type of kid it seemed like we never got. As a result it was more talent development (which Childress was good at pitching wise) and thus there were valleys that we shouldn’t have IMO. That was my beef recruiting wise with the previous coaching regime
There’s a whole litany of micro scale failures in the various exits we had, some with really good teams (2011 and 2016 especially)
