I don't if it is still an issue, but for the longest time because it wasn't considered a "sport", they weren't considered athletes - meaning any injuries weren't covered by the schools.

Finding actual good information on college cheerleading and injury coverage is really difficult it seems. Lots on high schools though, where apparently if you get hurt as a cheerleader - tough shite.
