Strangely for Georgia, they could be the first No. 3 seed to ever win a CFP

Fun fact.

Georgia was the first 3-seed to MAKE the title game.

The previous three 3-seeds lost by 30, 38 and 31 points respectively, being outscored 119-20.

We tried and failed in 2017. Glad we have another shot

Maybe during the off-season, I would like to go back and look at FCS brackets and compare how many times their seeds advanced and won.

I have a feeling if we do expand the CFP, after a few years our chart will still look very similar to one above, with the higher seeds clustered at the top. (That is, there has to be a hard cutoff where no one below a certain seed really has a statistically-significant shot.)

Saban just put "first to win as 3 seed" on his to do list for next year.

To add, quantifying might be difficult for this though, since they have a different selection process:
quote:

The field of 24 is split into two different qualifiers: 10 automatic and 14 at-large.

The automatic qualifiers are the teams that win one of the 10 conferences that receive automatic bids. The at-large qualifiers are selected by the FCS Playoff Selection Committee.

Once the full field of 24 teams is completed, the committee seeds the top eight teams.

The seeded teams receive a first-round bye in the tournament. The remaining 16 teams play first-round games and are paired according to geographic proximity and then placed in the bracket according to geographic proximity to the top eight seeds.

Teams cannot travel more than 400 miles via ground, and teams from the same conference that played each other during the regular season will not be paired for first-round games.

It looks like higher-seeded teams typically play a 12-game regular season, with four games in the playoffs (or 16 games total).

i would agree that we "choked" in the SEC championship. but now we are the 3 seed. we can't choke from that position

It is weird that a #1 seed took so long to win it.

True, if you choke every time is it really a choke anymore?

They only seed the top 8 (since 2009), except for 2020, when they only seeded the top 4.

2009: 2-Villanova
2010: 5-Eastern Washington
2011: 2-North Dakota State
2012: 1-North Dakota State
2013: 1-North Dakota State
2014: 2-North Dakota State
2015: 3-North Dakota State
2016: 4-James Madison
2017: 2-North Dakota State
2018: 1-North Dakota State
2019: 1-North Dakota State
2020: 2-Sam Houston

Definitely can't count Georgia out. If Bama and Georgia play again it's gonna be a dogfight. no pun intended.

Your team choked all year. What is Auburn's record the last 4 games? 0-4? You actually had a chance to win your division until you.....choked.

What bowl does a 6-6 team go to?

Huh, I guess that goes back to the "paired according to geographic proximity" for the rest.

Well so much for that.

We could at least extrapolate that No. 1 and 2 seeds are highly likely, with a very low probability of No. 4 and 5.

Which makes an eight or 12-team CFP seem sort of ridiculous on face value.

Is that what is keeping him coaching? We can swap seeds.
