Ole Miss is currently 6th best in the SEC (out of 14 teams) in Defensive PPG at 24.2. This is actually in the upper-half of this conference (above average).
They were 8th best last season at 25.0 PPG (average).

At FAU, their defense was as follows:

2017: 4th best (out of 14 teams) at 24.2 PPG.
2018: 11th best at 31.8 PPG.
2019: 3rd best at 22.3 PPG.

There is literally zero basis for the supposed notion that he doesn't care about defense or that he has some kryptonite weakness to defense. His defense at Ole Miss has empirically improved year over year, and I dare any of you to look at where Ole Miss ranked defensively from 2017-2019 before he arrived there. Hint - it was at the very bottom of the conference. So in actuality, he has IMPROVED their defense in the short time he has been there. On top of improving every other part of their program.

Defense, more so than offense, is dictated by TALENT. On offense you can run schemes and draw-up plays that allow lesser talented players to score. When you play defense, there is no magical scheme you can run that will make OK players look amazing. That is why Georgia and Alabama will always rank #1 and #2 in defense, until someone else can start fielding comparable talent. Ole Miss is Ole Miss and that is why he would be leaving to come here in the first place.

This is one of those idiotic statements that are made as fact, that aren't actually backed by anything. Fun fact, his 2009 Tennessee team had the 6th best defense in the SEC (22.2 PPG). Who actually wants to believe that a guy who's father was a legendary DC supposedly doesn't care about defense?

The other stupid non-fact is the story around him and 4th downs. Ole Miss is tied for a whopping 37th nationally in 4th Down Attempts this season at 24. And yet any time this topic is brought up, it's sold as if they don't punt or kick field goals. Last season they were 1st in the country at 49 attempts, but they also converted 63.27% of those. So as we can see, the "analytics" shift.
