He circled back to Golesh. Golesh told him he would take it but would not have anyone forced on him. Cohen abandoned his dreams of retention and keeping certain coaches and hired Golesh to save his arse and to keep the heat off of himself.
If this is true, this might be one of the most pivotal moments in Auburn history. Cohen ceded staff autonomy (something they even denied Kirby) to save his own arse. For the first time in multiple generations, an AU HC has the power to clean house from top to bottom.
So to recap, Cohen tripped over his own dick and one of the best hires in the cycle fell into his lap at midnight and then he surrendered the keys to the kingdom.

And I firmly believe that Durkin thought he was HC Sat night after the game. Was he told or did he assume it would be approved I have no idea.

So Cohen stressing keeping Durkin or any other coach for player retention blew up in his face when Golesh told him Hell No.
I doubt most of what you typed happened.

You don't have to believe it. I don't care. But any Auburn person that doesn't realize what Cohen is is just a naive homer clapping seal, wearing orange and blue glasses or has a agenda.
Cohen created this mess with his agenda/desire to retain certain coaches and players. His words throughout the search. No one can deny that.

I find it odd that they're actively trying to retain the man but hey, I'm sure you're right and not biased by your feelings about Cohen in any way.

Sounds like someone told Cohen to cut the shite/wouldnt approve the Durkin HC hire last second after the IB. Cohen already burned the Sumrall bridge so we get Golesh.
I think we are very very lucky Golesh accepted quickly or Ole Miss would have certainly taken Golesh.
Cohen tried his best to botch this I think.

I am not sure I even want Durkin to stay at this point. It's nothing he did wrong, but it just seems like there would be too many hard feelings. If he is having to think this hard, do we really want him staying? I want a guy who is all in.

Durkin may be waiting to see if another HC jobs comes through elsewhere.

Our hero needs to come forward, so we can have a parade for them.

I don't know what that even means.

I find it odd that despite a long track record of AU bungling hires, and the way Sumrall went from absolute lock of the century according to a lot of posters here, to the chaos that erupted in the last week leading up to the iron bowl, that some posters just willingly believe that nothing significant happened and we hired Golesh at 1am like that was the plan all along. Durkin was going to be the hire, I have absolutely zero doubts about that. Golesh accepting the gig at the last hour is nothing short of a miracle

Well- if that is the case then it could mean some volatility is ahead internally because it seems like Golesh is going to say what he thinks and do what is needed and the AU track record of having thin skin internally is well noted.

Or OR Cohen was waiting to see the results and how the players were after the Iron Bowl and then sent the contract after he decided Durkin wasn't the one.

Had we won the Iron Bowl, I'm sure Cohen planned to hire Durkin and he would offer Golesh if we didn't. The offer coming at 1am doesn't mean much to me since the game wasn't over until almost midnight in Tampa.

I don't know what to believe. If Durkin was going to be the hire, why wouldn't they just announce it before the game even started? That would be the obvious way to do it because it makes it look like that's who you concluded as your top choice (as opposed to making it look like a reactionary decision).
Waiting till after the game to name Durkin makes no sense because that basically signals that you think that he will win that game, otherwise the hire looks bad by default. Has a team ever hired the interim after he went 1-2 (the win being against an FCS team) and lost to the big instate rival? And what happens if you get blown out in the Iron Bowl (which we barely escaped)?

I wasn't locked on Sumrall either, I wasn't even sure he's the one I'd want, Florida hardly wanted him, and hardly even showed up for his arrival unlike Golesh. Sumrall was believed to backtrack after hearing that there were staff plants to monitor the coaches and the age old BoT interference while asked to retain Durkin when Sumrall is a defensive coach.

Same. To me, Sumrall and Golesh were the same hire. But after hearing what went down, it appears that Drago is the one that has a set of balls and Sumrall still sleeps with a nightlight.

I agree. AU seems to be a pretty matrixed organization. I wouldn’t think AU’s legal team would not have had a contract already ready to go- maybe it was the same for either finalist candidate- probably so.
The 1 AM deal seems more like trying to lock down who you want amidst the mad scramble by 4 other teams.
Either way- I like who we got. Give him space to make his team.

This doesn't seem to be nearly as much of a thing anymore. Sure there are active boosters but that goes for every school.
