Had no idea Mike Riley was 61 years old.

Riley may be a strange hire, but he is a good coach. Oregon State was a shitshow before he took over. He has the experience and he's also the anti-Pelini. It could go very well, it could go very badly.

Recruiting in Nebraska is a lot easier than Corvallis, a small town nestled between the rushing waters of the Willamette and Nike's big fricking shadow.

I'm sorry, but good coaches don't go 2-2 against D2 schools over the past 4 years.

If Mike Riley was a good coach he wouldn't have been stuck at Oregon State for so long

This is true. When I saw OSU, my brain instantly jumped to Ohio State, and I was just very much confused as to what was going on. It's been a long couple days.

Nebraska with Pelini:

.710 win %
3 10 win seasons
39-26 W/L vs .500+ teams
3 Bowl wins

Oregon State with Riley:

.523 win %
0 10 win seasons
37-31 against .500+ teams
2 Bowl wins

The hire looks really bad on paper. The only thing that makes it decent is that Riley is genuinely a great person and the fans and school won't be polarized by his personality. But that also could be said for a thousand other coaches.

It didn't help that people kept saying he was 61. I was like, there aren't any 61 year old coaches at OK State or Oregon state. I was obviously wrong.

Riley looks 45 with a cap on, 65 without one.

Was this like how we hired chizik

Chizik was probably the most shockingly bad hire of all time. Never really had a chance to succeed here long term because of that 5-19 attached to his name.

If Chizik took the time to evaluate players, managed the roster effectively and didn't have gaping depth issues and taught his players to play defense as they did in his first stint at Auburn he would still be at AU.

He probably wouldn't be half bad either.

I will also say that I love how this coordinator search isn't as bad as when we hired Loeffler.

The primary problem with the Chizik era was that we never had a solid identity. In 2009, we were a wide-open spread team, then in 2010 we were more of a spread option team. In 2011, halfway through the season we slowed down the offense and focused on a defense-first mentality. 2012 just became a muddled mess. No consistency in 4 years. Chizik's lack of control and organization is what did him in. But he was never really given that much of a chance to begin with because he was a 5-19 coach going against probably the greatest college football coach of all time.

Sumbitch should look old, he played for Bryant at Bama.

Which reminds me, was Sully the last Shug player/assistant still with a HC gig?
