He said he would. Any effort by Auburn at this point was absurdly late. They must have believed Carter was really, really close

State of Texas recruiting analyst for Rivals Sam Spiegelman changed his pick yesterday from Auburn to Texas A&M for TE Landen King.

E, have you heard anything on the Ian Jackson front? I haven’t heard anything in quite some time due to the Covid 19 crisis. Saw that he was announcing soon.

As Jones alluded to apparently we went on all in on Carter thinking we had a real shot and didn’t start pushing for Jackson until this week but Bama has been consistently recruiting him hard since they offered in February.

Rivals ranks the contenders for Jones' favorite TE Terrance Ferguson. AU #2.
I don't put too much stock in these type articles. For example they had the Vols #3 not long before he committed to them. Thought I would share nonetheless.

Ranking the Contenders: Four-star TE Terrance Ferguson
Adam Gorney • Rivals.com Recruiting Analyst @adamgorney
Terrance Ferguson has nearly 30 offers but in recent days the four-star tight end narrowed his favorites to five with Auburn, Oregon, USC, Wisconsin and Tennessee making the cut. There’s only one catch: The Littleton (Colo.) Heritage standout has not visited any of his top five yet and with the coronavirus travel ban in place, taking trips anytime soon is not possible. Ferguson said he could make his commitment without visits if it stays closed down but he’s also in no rush to decide. Below, we rank the contenders in Ferguson’s recruitment.
1. OREGON Coach Mario Cristobal is in communication with Ferguson and his family every day and that has made a big impression on the four-star tight end who said he has “by far” the best relationship with Cristobal out of all the head coaches recruiting him. He’s also hit it off with assistant coach Bobby Williams and Ferguson loves how new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead would utilize him in the offense. Ferguson has also called Oregon his dream school growing up and that should play a factor for sure.
2. AUBURN Auburn is looking for tight ends with Ferguson and former Texas pledges Lake McRee and Landen King among those topping the board. The Littleton Heritage standout is a huge fan of new offensive coordinator Chad Morris from his time as head coach at Arkansas, the first offer for Ferguson. He also has developed a strong bond with position coach Larry Porter and Ferguson especially likes how Morris has used tight ends at his previous stops.
3. USC Most of the USC coaching staff has been in close contact with Ferguson and that could be important for the Trojans because the four-star knows the history and tradition of the program. Perhaps most importantly is how the USC staff has described flexing out Ferguson in the offense and using him as a hybrid receiver/tight end, similar to how he plays in high school. USC also has an advantage with the networking opportunities Ferguson would be awarded by going to college in Los Angeles.
4. TENNESSEE The relationships are great between Ferguson and the Tennessee staff, especially with position coach Joe Osovet and Brian Niedermeyer among others. The four-star tight end said he feels a strong family atmosphere among the staff and that could carry a lot of weight as his recruitment continues. Another big draw for Tennessee is that it’s putting together one of the best recruiting classes in the country and playing in the SEC – especially for a team that’s getting better on paper – could be something to seriously consider.
5. WISCONSIN Tight ends coach Mickey Turner and Ferguson’s family have a great relationship and that’s going to be important as his recruitment moves forward. What really stands out for the Badgers is that they’ve had so many big-time tight ends throughout the years and Ferguson could have an opportunity to be next in line. A visit to all these schools will be crucial but perhaps most to Wisconsin.

I think he’s leaning toward Oregon. Behind Ferguson, I like McRee and Helm both.

Perfect example why the Rivals ranking the contender articles can be a ways off. They have AU #5 for Jaeden Roberts. JR told 247 a couple days earlier than AU, Bama, & Okie St stand out right now.

Ranking the Contenders: Jaeden Roberts
Sam Spiegelman • Rivals.com
Recruiting Analyst
@samspiegs
Rivals250 offensive lineman Jaeden Roberts
is a quiet giant. He opened the 2019 season at Galena Park (Texas) North Shore at right tackle before transitioning back inside to guard and helping lead his team to a consecutive Class 6A state championship.
Roberts, originally from Kansas, is a Texas transplant who made visits to Oklahoma State, LSU and Alabama, and has named Baylor, Auburn and Arkansas as top schools. He has no concrete timeline in place for a commitment, but a decision will likely be made once Roberts can resume taking visits.
LSU
Roberts landed an LSU offer and camped in Baton Rouge last summer, which has become a theme over the years for prospects coming out of Galena Park (Texas) North Shore High School, the alma mater of several current and former Tigers such as Eric Monroe and K'Lavon Chaisson.
Coach Ed Orgeron and offensive line coach James Cregg have identified Roberts as a priority target in the 2021 class, a group that currently does not have a commitment from an offensive lineman. Roberts has visited LSU quite a bit, and the interest is certainly mutual.
ALABAMA
Alabama was one of the final visits that the Rivals250 offensive lineman was able to make right before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NCAA into an indefinite dead period. Roberts was in Tuscaloosa as recently as February and was eyeing a return trip later in the spring. The Tide signed former North Shore offensive lineman Damieon George
from the 2020 class and are hoping to repeat history with Roberts in 2021.
OKLAHOMA STATE
Roberts made a junior day trip to Stillwater, Okla., earlier this spring and the coaching staff instantly clicked with the four-star guard. The Cowboys have remained consistent with communication and in their appeal to the talented Texas prospect.
Oklahoma State always emphasizes Lone Star State recruiting and the programs is one of the legitimate sleeper contenders to eventually land a commitment from Roberts.
ARKANSAS
Chad Morris' Arkansas staff offered Roberts when he relocated to Texas, and the new regime under Sam Pittman has not missed a beat. Arkansas is in the lead group for the four-star lineman and has several coaches involved in his recruitment. That group includes offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, who used to coach at Houston and continues to recruit the area, as does offensive line coach Brad Davis. It also must be mentioned that Pittman, a former offensive line coach, is playing a large role.
AUBURN
The aforementioned Chad Morris is no longer at Arkansas. Instead, he's the offensive coordinator at Auburn and assisting with the Tigers' recruiting efforts in the Lone Star State. Morris is working to flip Roberts' teammate, quarterback Dematrius Davis, and has given Auburn a unique edge in the race for Roberts.
Roberts has yet to visit The Plains, but expect the Tigers to be fully in the mix for an official visit after the pandemic.
BAYLOR
LSU was an early offer and an early favorite for Roberts, and several former Tigers staffers have joined former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda in Waco after he became the Bears' new head coach. Among those assistants is former LSU defensive line coach Dennis Johnson, who assumed the same role for Baylor. Johnson played a huge role in LSU landing Chaisson a few years back, and he is aiding Baylor's efforts with Roberts, who is intrigued by the possibility of playing not too far from his Houston home.

quote:From a guy on the Bunker who supposedly knows Ian, Family was really upset with AU & how they handled the recruitment. Gus wanted Ian along. T-Will pushed for Carter then called Ian the day Carter picked Clemson even though he hadn’t spoken to him in over a month. His entire family are HUGE Auburn fans. They wanted him at AU until they watched how his recruitment went. Legacy or no legacy no one wants to feel second fiddle, and AU absolutely handled him like he was second fiddle.

Jones, how believably is some of this? I would think Gus would have his assistant even on the D side of the ball keep the pot warm so to speak on a guy he wanted even if Steele & Co. had 1 guy higher on the board since AU was never a lock for that guy.

It’s hard for me to believe that T-Will would go a month without talking to any target. We’ve heard about him talking to guys frequently that are waaaay down the board at LB. That guy never shuts up. So I don’t believe that part. The rest looks perfectly feasible
He was obviously the back-up plan to Carter and this makes me think Mondon is long gone too. What a mess. It’s not the end of the world but it sucks to be in this spot with an elite player. We just can’t afford to miss layups

Gus and Twill need to go hat in hand and try to fix things with the Jackson household. This board was all over this guy and questioning why he hadn’t been offered. It’s shocking how badly we handled this.

I played football with a family member of Ian's. I haven't outright asked the family member, but based on what he's been saying, this more or less lines up.
fricking sucks.

I won’t go that far. I like Ian Jackson but I don’t think he’s a cant-miss guy. But if he’s your backup plan to Carter (and he’s a slam dunk if you push) then you need to figure out a way to make the kid feel like he’s your #1 guy. It’s not that tough to accomplish.
I still like other LBs way better. But I’m not the Auburn coaching staff and I’m not paid to evaluate these guys

Ex recruiting junkies are a little like vegans. No matter what, they love to point out they no longer follow recruiting closely.

Zero crystal balls on the guy. Guessing Warren took his off? Didn’t think you could outright delete them.
Just saying that there’s a significant degree of guesswork involved on this one but I like our chances
