So 60/40 run pass would be a great improvement if the avg pass play is for 3x the yardage of the run plays and we increase overall yards per play by 25%. then that becomes great. While we have KP and KJ there I would expect the run to stay heavy while the WR help that happen. Then 2018 becomes the year of the pass when we repeat our defense of the 2017 NC.

Offered Riley $1.4mm/yr for 3 years
Not enough to leave what he has IMO 2 Heisman candidates returning and a guaranteed 10 win schedule.

Is there any reason for Riley to take a lateral move? We may have a couple of Heisman candidates ourselves, but he can stay and know what he has and how to work with his current staff and likely move on to HC in 2018. If he does come here and make things happen we will be sitting right here next year having the same conversation about who will be our next OC. Although it may be with a NC trophy to ease the pain.

Well for starters a $500k pay raise is nice. Also, a successful SEC OC is about as good a spot you can be for a HC gig. And if he comes in and delivers, he can add another successful stop to his resume.

Isn't he HC in waiting already? I think..

That's what someone posted yesterday well before the pay sites started mentioning Lincoln Riley.
This is what I've been trying to tell y'all. Pay sites regurgitate fodder to keep fans interested. They don't know shite. I hope I'm wrong but there is zero chance Lincoln Riley leaves Oklahoma for this dumpster fire.

If we managed to hire Riley I'll give every person on this board a dollar.

We're just doing the groundwork to hire him as HC when Gus and his lackluster OC hire flame out next year.

Just because his name got mentioned he will likely get a raise. A successful OC in a P5 with a Heisman winner and a likely shot at the CFP is pretty equal no matter which school when it comes to HC offers. Again the two positions are so equal I think it would be hard to make that move into an unkown situation vs one that has a lot of variables even with great potential up side.

If Riley comes in and is successful enough for 1 year to get a HC job, then he did well enough to keep us happy.

Well for starters a $500k pay raise is nice.
Which is far more likely to happen.

Have to agree. Always felt like muschamp paved a foundation for a top 25 defense and Steele continued to build on that. We hadn't seen a top 25 defense in almost ten years. So yes it was worth it. If we get the passing game adjusted and then next guy carries it on then a 1 year deal to fix our woes is worth it again.

Which is pretty much what happened with Boom in 2015. Yeah, I get that he set the stage for our defensive improvement in 2016, but I seem to recall the sales pitch was that he'd improve the defense enough in Year One to put us in contention for the West title, thus justifying his huge salary. That didn't happen.

Why does it matter how much we pay him?
We shouldn't be looking at the "what if this happens?" as much as the "who gives us the greatest probability of success?" and go after him. And Riley is clearly that #1.
If he comes in for a year and fixes things, great; if he comes in for a few years and fixes things, great; if he comes in for a year or two and doesn't get it done, oh well, we'll go find someone else.
