Borah Peak, due east from Stanley. Three weeks ago. I know you were thinking about visiting. This is 8? miles on gravel on BLM/NP/Forestry land to get to the trailhead. The Borah trailhead is signed on the east side of Highway 93 (listed on maps as forest road 279). You'll run into more wildlife than homo sapiens if that's what you are after. Its Mars.

Mackay, ID is another spot you might consider. You'll be eating the same thing for a week, but might be invited home by the cafe proprieters. Even Stanley's "tourist season" is a little laughable.

I love Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons. However, I’d like to find something a little less crowded. This is definitely an option. I need to find a little, quiet mountain town to spend summers in.

Tougher and tougher now with wildfires every summer. June is better than August.
Montana was a mess this summer

Maybe. The west is so huge its hard to fathom. It happens in generations if you look at data and forest managemet. I could give my opinions on forestry management but it doesn't matter. I'll gladly help if I can!

You are cutting deep. Alpine is my moniker. There's always a huge tailwind in Alpine as you approach Jackson Hole. I've raced there a bit. I think you are thinking of Afton, WY.

Fine by me but still means another decade or more of this

First few summers were pretty clear but the last several have been tough. Hope this phase is quick as I don’t have any plans to move east anytime soon

Afton, WY. Right.

We stopped there for souvenirs and toured the local iconic hotel. Seems it’s a popular fly fishing destination. Alpine, WY would be preferable as there seemed to be more to do.

Alpine, WY is a nice spot and its at the opening to the Snake River Canyon to Jackson and the Greys and Salts confluence. Afton is a bit more rural and flat. I don't even know if Afton has a grocery store but I've only driven and road biked through there.

I'm going to mention the (Alpine) tailwind again because it seemingly violates the laws of physics. Every year but one that I participated in the LOTOJA bike race there was a 15-25mph tailwind up that canyon. That stretch is the last 30 miles of a 205 mile bike race. You can be ascending 3%-4% grade and you don't have to peddle if you don't want. Its great.

People that don’t run or bike have no appreciation for altitude gain or headwinds.
