Is Gadsden City RB Jamontez Woods in same class as NFL players Ito Smith, T.J. Yeldon? (AL.com)
quote:

Gadsden City football coach Bart Sessions has been around some talented backs during his career.

He was the defensive coordinator at Daphne when current Jacksonville Jaguar T.J. Yeldon helped the Trojans to the Class 6A state title. He was the head coach at McGill-Toolen when current Atlanta Falcon Ito Smith powered an impressive Yellow Jacket playoff run.

Sessions believes Gadsden City senior running back Jamontez Woods is in the same class as Smith and Yeldon.

"His style is probably between those two guys," Sessions said. "T.J. was so smooth. He is a longer back and was just incredibly versatile. He created matchup problems everywhere. Ito had one of the best jump cuts you will see. He could stick his toe in the ground and cut on a dime.

"Jamontez is a bit of a combination. He'll create some matchup problems and be that smooth runner, but also can stick is toe in the ground and get vertical. We're excited about what he can do for us this season."

The 6-foot, 210-pound Woods has racked up nearly 20 offers, including Ole Miss, UAB, Troy, Tulane, South Alabama and Western Kentucky. Sessions also said he is high on the boards at Auburn and Alabama, though neither has offered yet.

He's a bit underrated as far as the 2019 senior class in Alabama goes - currently No. 58 on the 247 composite rankings -- but Sessions said his stock is rising in college circles.

"We didn't give him the football enough last year," he said. "It's a statistic driven world that we live in. Jamontez didn't have 1,500 yards rushing because we just didn't hand him the ball enough or, in some cases, maybe the quarterback pulled it in an RPO situation or whatever. He also shared time in the backfield with a senior. However, his yards per carry is really good. We've got to focus on him more this year."

Sessions thinks that will happen with the addition of new offensive coordinator Mark Heaton. The former Russellville head coach joined the Titans' staff this spring and has added more detail to Gadsden City's blocking schemes.

Sessions described Woods as a physical back and a leader on the team. He ran for 849 yards and eight touchdowns on 169 carries in 2017 and also caught six passes for an additional 93 yards and a score.

"He's a kid who wants the ball in every situation," he said. "When we need the tough yards, he wants it in his hands and we have to do a better job of making that happen. He runs with great power.

"Like most great backs, if he gets it 20 times a night, he is going to break tackles and run away from some folks. He finishes runs as well as anyone I've ever been around."

Sessions said Woods' recruitment up to this point has mirrored that of Smith, who had limited Power 5 offers out of McGill-Toolen despite rushing for 1,800 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior. He signed with Southern Miss where he was a perennial All-Conference USA player and ran for more than 1,100 yards in a season three times.

"It's the same type deal," Sessions said. "In a few years, there will be some colleges looking back on Jamontez just like they did Ito and saying, 'We should have pursued that kid harder.'"

Woods and Gadsden City open the 2018 season at Etowah on Aug. 24.

Chip Lindsey coached Ito Smith at Southern Miss....

Woods is a guy I've seen mentioned as a possible backup option if AU were to strike out on Cain & Richards. Him, Derrian Brown, Tye Edwards & Tahj Gary are probably the guys to watch later in the cycle if AU doesn't hit on their top guys

I actually really like Woods. He has a great stiff arm. Obvious Cain is #1, but I wouldn't be upset if we got Woods.

Agreed. Just watched his tape. He's faster than I expected. Looks like a good fit for what we do

Some solid RB options this class. I really want Cain or Richards (Emery's my favorite but he seems to have dropped us) but if we end up with someone like Tye Edwards or Jamontez Woods I'm not too worried

I wasn't a huge fan watching Edwards tape, but the coaches seem to like him. Woods definitely has more speed than I was expecting. Any time I can see them separating from the little guys, that's usually fast enough for me for a RB

With his size and running style, he'd bee a pretty good fit in our offense.

Edwards power + lateral quickness is what is intriguing. Woods appears faster which surprised me. He doesn't really LOOK fast when running (if that makes sense) but consistently pulls away in the open field. I see some Kerryon to Woods game with that stiff arm plus ability to change directions though he's not as quick as KJ imo

FWIW it appears Edwards has fallen on our board so they may not like him as much as some of us fans. Agreed though that Woods is a good fit for our offense. Would probably take him over Derrian Brown imo

REALLY wish we could have stayed in the Emery hunt. I think he's the best back in the class (better than even Trey Sanders) but dude has fallen in love with Starkville.....

4* LB Rian Davis says he will take an OV to AU this season. Says T-WILL is most cool coach he has met & a big reason why he's interested in AU. But UGA continues to be the clear favorite

Apparently we never stopped pursuing him. He just liked other schools better and just wasn't feeling Auburn.

Ya I meant I wish Emery had kept us in his top group. He's my Master Teague of this cycle

Apparently 247 gonna have some ranking updates today. Nix will be in the top 4 QBs, not sure where he will fall overall tho. Pickens will probably creep closer to a 5*. Interested to see if 247 finally pulls trigger & gives Pappoe his 5th

I know nothing about this guy, but I do know we're getting low on Davis's on the roster. Based on that I assume he's #1 on our board.

With the 247 update, will Bo be their #1 DT QB now?

Possibly. They might switch him to pro style tho not sure

Rattler will be #1 then I think Nix will either be 2 or 3 with Sam Howell. Hillinski in at #4. That's my guess at least

Personally I would rank em Nix, Rattler, Howell, Hillinski

Marcello went on a CB rampage today. Put in picks to AU for Keiondre Jones, Derick Hall & Jalen Curry. He doesn't often put in picks & usually only on guys that look like locks

Yeah. Bo went from #8 (92 grade) to #2 (94 grade). Not bad

247 gave Pappoe a sizable bump too

We have 3 players in the top 50 so far. Getting Booth would add another 5 star.
